"My first three years, I thought I needed to dedicate my time to track and make sure that it would be worthwhile for myself and rrx0904025coaches," Belcher said. "But going into this year, I didn't get put on scholarship and there was no real tie for me to stick just with track."I'll do it again this spring and it's still very important to me, but I thought about how I always wanted to play football again.
Belcher and a friend, who hoped to make the team as a punter, took to the school's rrx0904026 fields to work on their respective skills in mid-July. It just so happened that Notre Dame was hosting a high-school camp near the rec fields during one of those workouts.Belcher approached one of the coaches to see what he needed to do to rrx0904030 a walk-on tryout. The coach immediately gained Belcher and his friend an audience with Irish defensive line and special teams coach Mike Elston.
Belcher made an impression and was invited to a formal tryout on Aug. 1. He found out he'd made the team while drving back to Cheyenne the following day. Notre Dame started fall camp Aug. 5."I was a little surprised that I earned a spot," Belcher said. "I was so used to playing high-school football where I had to fill all these different roles playing offense, defense and special teams. But college is much more specialized and that being able to snap and run helped me fill my role the way I was supposed to."
